Who are we?
We see ourselves as a centre of expertise for the history of the city and as a sounding board for the current issues of the people in it. The Stadtmuseum is intended to be a space for interaction and communication for the diverse urban society. With its collections, it preserves the cultural heritage of the city of Dresden. We work in accordance with the principles of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
In our work, we link the past, present and future. Based on Dresden and its population, we deal with the city and regional history as well as its national and international references.
As the city's memory, the Stadtmuseum brings history to life for and with the city's society. We want to enable insights, invite encounters and encourage dialogue on relevant topics of the city and society.
Who do we benefit and for whom do we work?
The Stadtmuseum is committed to the people of Dresden and its surroundings. We also offer tourists the opportunity to find out about aspects of the city's development.
The Stadtmuseum aims to become more inclusive and diversity-orientated and thus reach new target groups. We are working to enable more participation in various areas of the museum's work. To this end, we take into account the different needs, interests and demands of the user groups in all their diversity. Previous non-users are to be specifically addressed.
How do we want to work?
We define quality standards for our work, qualify ourselves and evaluate our processes. We see the Stadtmuseum as a learning institution that continues to develop and also picks up on social transformation processes. We strive to work even more sustainably and develop guidelines for this.
The collection is the centre of the museum's work. We develop themes from it. The Stadtmuseum's holdings are continually being expanded. To this end, we are updating the collection concept with a view to evidence from the recent past and gaps in the collection. In future, we would also like to integrate urban society more closely into the collecting process. We are working on remedying deficits in the indexing and storage of the holdings as well as in the area of provenance research and digitisation.
The city museum is present in the digital space. We want to expand our digital offerings and make them more diverse. We are developing a strategy for this.
We pursue an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach when developing and realising projects. We cooperate with external experts, involve communities and act as an active partner in networks. As part of the network of museums in the city of Dresden, we are committed to ensuring that work processes and structures are constantly adapted to changing challenges. A good working atmosphere is very important to us.
Our specific strategies
Inclusion, participation and diversity are fundamental principles that guide our actions. The Dresden City Museum is to become more accessible, for example by reducing barriers in the museum building and in the digital space. As a first step, we are expanding the opportunities for blind and visually impaired people to participate. For more inclusive projects, we are developing a practical guide to accessible exhibition design.
When planning, designing and realising projects, we take into account the diversity of Dresden's urban society and include the topics that are relevant to them. Not every project can reflect all perspectives. However, the diversity of the city and its people should be reflected more strongly in the cross-section of the Stadtmuseum's programmes. und ihrer Menschen aber stärker widerspiegeln.
Through open communication and cooperation, we also want to reach groups that have not previously been addressed or have been addressed only to a limited extent. We use suitable methods to ensure greater participation in the museum and its content. This includes a participatory approach that enables Dresdeners to play an active role in the development of content and formats as well as in engaging with and expanding the museum's collections.
Fair cooperation and networking are important to us in order to pool expertise and resources and to gain multipliers and reach. We are aware that this requires long-term relationship work. We provide our own resources for this on a permanent basis.
Our mission statement will soon be expanded to include the topics of digitality, sustainability and collection strategy.
