From Dresden to the top of the world

Grandmaster Wolfgang Uhlmann (1935-2020) was the Dresden chess legend and the most successful player in the GDR. He won the national championship eleven times and represented his country eleven times at chess olympiads.

Around 1970, he was one of the world's top players and even competed in the Candidates Tournament for the World Championship.

Famous as a "French specialist" and as Anatoly Karpov's second, he always remained close to the people: at countless simultaneous events, through his modesty and popularity far beyond the chessboard.

The presentation in the gallery honours the life and work of this extraordinary sportsman.

Organised by the Förderverein Schach Wolfgang Uhlmann e. V. on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Dresden Chess Club (1876) and the 100th anniversary of the Dresden Chess Congress (1926)
