Seeing and understanding modernity. On the trail of the architect Wolfgang Hänsch
Wolfgang Hänsch (1929-2013) is one of the most important Dresden architects of the 20th century. With the construction of the Kulturpalast, the historic reconstruction of the Semperoper Dresden and its extension with modern functional buildings, the "Sächsische Zeitung" press and printing house complex and the reconstruction of the auditorium of the Dresden State Theatre, he created outstanding buildings in the centre of Dresden. They have become an integral part of the cityscape.
To honour his work, in 2019 the state capital of Dresden organised the project day "Seeing and understanding modernity. In the footsteps of architect Wolfgang Hänsch", which is held once a year with a year 5 or 6 class.
For the eighth time, all Dresden schools are now invited to submit an informal application to the Saxon Architects' Foundation with their year 5 or 6 classes by 13 March 2026 to take part free of charge. The class will be selected by lottery on 17 March 2026.
The cultural project day with a focus on architecture will take place on Wednesday, 24 June 2026. The aim of the day is to impart knowledge of building culture to the class - in particular using the example of the social buildings constructed by Wolfgang Hänsch. The pupils will become an active part of a city tour through Dresden's old town, embarking on a photographic journey of discovery. They will get to know various buildings and gain an insight into different architectural epochs, their similarities and contrasts. The project begins at Theaterplatz and the Semperoper Dresden. Further stops are the Busmannkapelle, the Kulturpalast and the Neumarkt, including the Frauenkirche. The project day includes a joint lunch and an elaborately designed architectural leporello, which is creatively designed by the participants in the Dresden City Museum at the end of the tour.
The project is funded by the state capital of Dresden. Realisation partners are the Foundation of Saxon Architects and the Dresden City Museum.
